Understanding Individuals
People are amazing creatures. We have the capability to do amazing things, horrific things, and everything in between. I love what I do for a living because I get to work with people. At first, it frightened me because working solely with people (versus product) can be a challenging task. We are unpredictable and complicated and what we project on the surface may not be conclusive of what's inside.

Young professionals...think smaller if possible
"[Before the age of 30, young professionals should] Go to a small company. Normally, in a big company, it is good to learn processing; you are part of a big machine. But when you go to a small company, you learn the passion, you learn the dreams. You learn to do a lot of things at one time." - Jack Ma, $27.3B Net Worth, Founder of Alibaba Group

My take on the telephone...
"Can you just email me the info?" I have developed strong feelings of hatred for this question in my early career. Fortunately, I rarely get asked this question anymore. There's a reason for that, which I'll get to later in this post.

Recruiter VS Candidate Prospect - Who Holds the "Power"?
About four or five times per week, I stumble across blog posts or comments on a blog post regarding recruiters that will boggle my mind. Many times, these comments are written by someone who had one or two bad experiences with a bad (or junior) recruiter so they are on mission to destroy headhunters entirely. To be honest, that's fine with me. I've accepted that people have animosity towards recruiters and I'm more than happy to prove them wrong. If people weren't having these bad experiences from time to time, then I wouldn't have as much opportunity to shine! That sounds a bit selfish, I know...but it's true!

Staying in touch...or not
There are many qualities that separate highly successful professionals from the rest, but one thing that is incredibly important is staying in touch with individuals who have made a positive impact on your life, your career, or both. As I grow and mature in my own career and personal life, I realize that I have been relatively bad at staying in touch with people. It's hard - you're busy and time flies by. Before you know it, you've lost touch with those who may hold the key, or a piece of the key, that could unlock the door to "opportunity". That opportunity could be a business deal, a hiring or job opportunity, or something as simple as a friendship.

Retention - Where does it start?
I hate to cover cliche topics like every other recruiting blog in the world such as "the war on talent", "social media recruiting", or "challenges of recruiting developers in 2016", but I do think it's important for everyone to discuss employee retention. We've seen many studies lately highlighting the truth around why employees leave your organization. Most often, your employees are turning over because they are not being recognized consistently amongst their peers, they do not have a clear career path or something to work towards, they are being managed versus led, and/or they are lacking a balance between work and life. These are the main drivers of turnover today, despite what people say about compensation.

Pride or Shame?? A Confidence Boost for Recruiters.
To kick off this post, I want to be sure everyone knows that this is absolutely not a "woe is me" storyline. Rather, I hope this instills a bit of confidence in my peers with regards to the work they are doing and their accomplishments.

A Day in the Life...
Many people are very unclear as to what a "day in the life" of a recruiter looks like. I have recently been asking people that question and I think it's incredibly interesting to hear different takes on what people think recruiters do on a day-to-day basis. Most people respond with, "You find people jobs". I love that one! I've also heard, "You help people with their resumes" and my all-time favorite, "You interview job applicants". I think the craziest response I have gotten, too often in fact, is, "I have absolutely no idea". Ouch!
