How has Covid-19 affected your business?
Being that we strictly recruit at the leadership level, the pandemic had an immediate impact on our business. Many of our Minneapolis-based clients quickly shifted priorities, and hiring at the leadership level from the outside was no longer one of them, which put many of those initiatives on hold. We are fortunate to have clients operating on a national level, so we've been engaged to lead searches in other markets where Covid-19 has not had such an adverse impact. But we have also dedicated the past few months to driving much-needed operational efficiencies and giving.
Do executive search firms play a role in helping to diversify business leadership? If so, what is that role? How do you approach this issue with your clients?
Everybody plays a role in diversifying organizations, search partners included. We are accountable to opening the door to diverse talent pools during the hiring process by:

Educating stakeholders on the importance of diversity at the leadership level and ensuring the hiring team is diverse;

Making diversity a priority during search intake discussions and being flexible on hard experience requirements, which may stifle our ability to surface a diverse pool of candidates;

Using creative sourcing and research strategies; and
-
Telling our clients' stories in a way that sheds light on their authentic commitment to a highly inclusive culture.
While we play an important role, we are not the end-all solution in the diversification of organizations and their leadership teams. Senior leaders must genuinely commit to building inclusive environments that enable the attraction, retention and success of people from all walks of life before an effective diversity hiring strategy can be deployed.
